As a result, I missed Xmas and the New Year and I am still recovering in hospital. This was officially the worst Xmas of my life.
I am bored to tears having nothing to do in hospital and I desperately miss the internet. I hope to get out soon and get back to blogging but I don't currently have a discharge date. I am undergoing Physiotherapy and I am well on my way to recovery.

Hope to speak to you soon.
What I haven't shown so far is some of my scenery items - and I do have quite a bit to show. Anyone who knows me well, will know that I place a great deal of emphasis on my terrain and scenery items. I like nothing better than a fantastic looking gaming board that makes you want to play on it. So, ever since I began my Bolt Action project I have slowly been amassing various scenery and terrain items.
In this post I'll be looking at three separate sets I bought - a ruined a house, a set of bomb craters and some road sections.

I'll start with the ruined house. This is a plastic construction kit produced by Warlord Games specifically for Bolt Action. It comes with its own scenic base to which I have added a few tufts of static grass.

It is a simple rectangular building with a staircase leading to a small landing. The walls are very thick and a selection of sandbags are provided for extra cover on the doors and windows. It is big enough to hold a squad of about ten men.

To the right of my photos is the Warlord Games crater set, which contains six small resin cast craters. I don't think you could play a game set in World War 2 without craters!

Finally, are my modular road sections, which are produced by War World Gaming, a firm I discovered on Amazon UK. The road sections are roughly 8" in length and about 3" wide. They come in straight sections, curved sections and an assortment of junctions. They are textured and ideal for country lanes. The road sections are available in grey (as shown) or dirt brown. I found them very useful and with a few sets I can easily fill my gaming board.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com30tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-39715307737763110922019-12-12T15:35:00.000+00:002019-12-12T15:35:40.047+00:00Bolt Action - German Panzer IV Ausf HThe Panzer IV Ausf. G evolved into the Ausf. H with the addition of a slightly improved L/46 75mm high velocity anti-tank gun. The Ausf. H would become the standard German battle tank until the final Ausf. J was developed, but this only had minor changes, such as the improvement of the gearbox and the turret's roof armour. If any tank can claim to be the standard battle tank of the German Army then it is the Panzer IV.
It was not well liked by its crews, who were often veterans and very aware of the tank's drawbacks. They nicknamed it the Sardinebuchse, "Sardine Tin" due to its relative lack of armour.

In Bolt Action, it is classed as a Medium Tank with 1 turret-mounted heavy anti-tank gun with co-axial MMG and 1 forward facing hull mounted MMG.
This Panzer IV has Schurzen Armoured Skirts fitted. These stand-off, thin armoured plates protecting a tank's turret and sides were developed to act as additional armour against Russian anti-tank rifles. Later they became more widely used and also helped protect a tank against shaped charges by detonating the warhead before it hit the main armour. If a German tank has Schurzen , then anti-tank rifles and shaped charges such as bazookas, PIATs, etc. never get the +1 penetration bonus for hitting the vehicle in the side.
The Ausf. G, H and J tanks all cause Tiger Fear. Such was the lethal reputation of Tiger tanks, that often Allied troops were spooked by the appearance of any German heavy armour, mistakenly thinking that any Panzer IV was a Tiger waiting in ambush. All enemy units that have line of sight to one or more German vehicles with the Tiger Fear special rule suffer from Tiger Fear. Units suffering from Tiger Fear count as having one extra pin marker on them when taking any order test, except if ordered to Fire against a vehicle causing Tiger Fear.
I decided to give my Panzer IV a mottled green and red-brown camouflage scheme over a sand base coat. It looks quite effective and I'm happy with the results.
This plastic kit is produced by Warlord Games and you have the options of making the Ausf. F, G or H variants. It went together very well and I knew as soon as I saw it that I wanted to add the Schurzen, which are also optional. Interestingly enough, the points costs for the inexperienced, regular and veteran crews of the Panzer IV Ausf. H are identical to the points costs for the inexperienced, regular and veteran crews of the American M41A1 Sherman 75mm tank, which is what Oddball's tank is that I showed earlier, albeit stripped of its Hollywood extras, i.e. 188 points, 235 points and 282 points respectively. This makes my only two tanks (so far) a good match in theory. I'm keen to try them out in a battle to see who is the better.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com23tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-21960263790129890992019-12-09T11:21:00.000+00:002019-12-09T11:21:57.223+00:00Konflict 47 Colonel Grauler & WerewolfKonflict 47 is Warlord Games' Weird World War 2 game based on the popular Bolt Action rules, featuring giant mechs and supernatural creatures. It is very similar to the Secrets of the Third Reich game by West Wind but the history differs somewhat. Even so, you could use figures for both games together with your preferred rules set. For me, that is Konflict 47 as I much prefer their rules, background and figures.
I recently bought this two figure set of Sturmbahnfuhrer (Colonel) Grauler and Werewolf by Warlord Games. The great weakness of Hitler’s Occult Forces is the Vampire’s
inability to go out in daylight. To overcome this weakness the mountains
and forests of Germany were scoured and the shock troops of the Wulfen
SS were formed.
We have here a werewolf stormtrooper from the Wulfen SS, ready to
rend the enemies of the Third Reich limb-from-limb. Never too picky in
their rendition this Wulfen is accompanied by Frau Grauler, the She-Wolf
of the SS who keeps her minions in line with frequent admonishment with
her riding crop.

I plan on buying even more Werewolves (at least six off them) to bolster this set. Full rules for using Wulfen are provided in the basic Konflict 47 rulebook and they are fearsome troops. As with the medium machine gun team, I have based the figures separately to make it easier for removing casualties. This set is produced by Warlord Games as part of their Bolt Action range and the troops are all Panzer Grenadiers.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-89995225972199332952019-12-03T14:36:00.000+00:002019-12-03T14:36:17.902+00:00Bolt Action - German Medium Machine Gun TeamThe Germans were equipped with two excellent machine guns in the MG34 and the MG42 - known to Allied troops as "Hitler's Buzz Saw" because of its distinctive noise. Unlike other armies, the Germans used the same machine gun both as a squad weapon and as a tripod-mounted support weapon. The tripod mount provided a much more stable firing platform and made it easier to keep up a sustained fire using a belt feed. Therefore, the tripod-mounted machine gun is treated as a medium machine gun, while thee squad weapon is treated as a light machine gun.
The Warlord Games Panzer Grenadier Medium Machine Gun team for use in Bolt Action consists of a gunner, loader and spotter all in prone poses. The machine gun is mounted on a tripod.
German Medium Machine Gun teams are either regular or veteran troops. The MMG has a range of 36" and because of the "Hitler's Buzz Saw" special rule gets 6 shots per turn instead of 5 shots. It is classed as a Team and Fixed weapon. This is a very powerful support weapon. It is time for another of my Monthly Musings and I start with another Jim Silke panting of Vampirella. It has been an interesting month for me. Of late I have been doing a lot of painting and modelling but hardly any gaming. That changed this past month. I have played many games of Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter (it's very addictive!), a few games of Wacky Races and even a game of Zombicide:Invader. It felt so satisfying to play so many games.

On the painting and modelling front I have been concentrating on my German Panzer Grenadier army for Bolt Action. I have just about finished painting 30 plastic Warlord Games Panzer Grenadier infantry, a Panzer IV Ausf. H, an Sdkfz 251/10 Hanomag half track with 37mm gun and two Sdkfz 251/1 Hanomag half tracks. All vehicles were produced by Warlord Games. Speaking of them, I made use of their Black Friday sale and bought a King Tiger tank, 3 Tiger 1 tanks and an American M10 Wolverine tank destroyer. The reason for buying so many tanks is that I bought the Tank War supplement for Bolt Action earlier this month. I do plan on buying more Sherman tanks later. I was most impressed with Tank War but my main focus for Bolt Action still remains infantry vs infantry with just a small smattering of vehicles. However, playing Tank War will be an interesting diversion from the norm.
The big news for me is that yesterday I received my Mega package of the Judge Dredd: I Am The Law skirmish game from those fine folk at Warlord Games. A full
review of it including the rules and figures will appear on my WOIN
blog. Initial impressions are highly favourable. The figures are
absolutely first rate although they are rather large at 35mm tall on
average. Some may see this as a bad thing and yet another example of
scale creep. This does not bother me at all as it means they fit in well
with some of my older Judge Dredd miniatures and scale creep has
never bothered me that much. As I keep saying, people come in all
shapes and sizes so why shouldn't our miniature figures reflect that?

Having played Warlord Games' Strontium Dog sci-fi skirmish game before I am very familiar with the new rules in the Judge Dredd game, which are based on them. By the way, my Judge Dredd WOIN campaign is ready to go and will be played alongside any Judge Dredd: I Am The Law games. I haven't decided yet if they should be connected by running them at the same point in time with the same characters or not. Most likely I will. It would seem to make sense.

There's not much more to report here so I'll sign off and remind you to check out my WOIN blog for all my Judge Dredd news. Cheers, folks!Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-12367116474638045252019-11-27T13:25:00.001+00:002019-11-27T14:25:26.498+00:00Bolt Action - Geman Sniper TeamsDuring the battle of Stalingrad, Russian snipers took such a heavy toll upon the beleaguered Wehrmacht that the Germans began to train and equip their own marksmen to undertake a specialist role as snipers. A variety of rifles were used for sniping including the standard KAR-98K and the semi-automatic Gewehr 43, all fitted with the high quality ZF39 telescopic sight, and equipped with precision-manufactured ammunition.
These four 28mm scale figures are produced by Artizan Designs and are classed as German Late War Snipers. I was a bit surprised that Warlord Games do not make any Panzer Grenadier sniper teams. They do make a Waffen SS sniper team, which could be used but I'll be using those in my SS army. These Artizan Designs figures are perfect for a couple of Panzer Grenadier sniper teams.
In Bolt Action sniper teams usually consist of a sniper and a spotter and these figures represent two snipers and two spotters. I do like them a lot and snipers can be very deadly if used well. These will certainly see action in my Western Europe games of 1944-45.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-47316915423918488802019-11-24T15:50:00.000+00:002019-11-24T15:52:33.663+00:00Bolt Action - German High Command This set of three 28mm scale German High Command figures is available from Warlord Games as part of their Bolt Action range.
These are not named characters but I probably will name them some time soon. As well as using them as possible high ranking leaders (Captain level or higher) for your German forces, they would make for a fine objective, much like the downed RAF pilot I showed recently. An Allied mission could be to capture one or all of them, or perhaps an assassination mission in the style of the Dirty Dozen. I recently received the Wacky Races Deluxe Edition boardgame produced by CMON. The Deluxe Edition differs from the standard edition in that it comes with pre-painted cars, which was a huge deciding factor in me buying it. I wanted the pre-painted cars - they are gorgeous (see photo below). Painting all eleven cars would have been far too time consuming for me, especially considering how many other projects I have on the go.
The game is really simple to play and I've found it a lot of fun. Although designed for 2-6 players I've been playing it solo by randomly choosing three cars to control and adding three random neutral cars. There must always be six racers plus Dick Dastardly (whom no one controls) in the game.
Here are the game contents - rulebook, a deck of 40 racer specific cards (four per racer), a deck of 64 movement cards, a deck off 16 Dick Dastardly trap cards, a quick play rule sheet, 11 miniature cars, 10 racer dashboards, assorted terrain tiles and the starting grid. The components are very well made and produced.
Each racer starts with a dashboard to place their special cards on. They can be played at any time in the game but once played are turned over to show they have been used. They feature various tactics that are specific to each racer and as such are very flavourful.
Here is an example of the board layout. The terrain tiles are placed randomly to make the race track consisting of four different terrain types. Players each receive three movement cards per turn and must match them with the tile they are on to advance. For the first tile they move to each turn they can play any movement card, ensuring they always move at least one tile per turn. After that they must match the ties they are on with the appropriate movement card, so they could move one, two or three tiles per turn depending on the cards they pick. No dice are used in this game - it is entirely card driven. Tactic cards play a big part of the game. Knowing when to play them is key. For example, when I was playing the Red Baron in his Crimson Haybailer, I kept his advance 4 tiles card to the finale and won with it as he overtook the two cars in front of him who were closer to the finishing line!
Race cars are placed at either side of a game tile when they move. If both sides are occupied the car advances to the next available tile. Dick Dastardly, however, moves along the centre of each tile.
Dick Dastardly randomly moves by moving onto a tile that matches the movement card on top of the discard pile at the end of each player's turn. If he moves into the lead, he stops and lays a trap card then retreats to the back of the pack of racers. Note that he can never win the race but he does cause much mayhem.
I really like this game a lot. It brings back so many happy memories of watching the cartoons. Indeed, I also bought the DVD with all 34 episodes of the original Wacky Races cartoons on three discs. So who is my favourite racer? Obviously it is the Creepy Coupe driven by the Gruesome Twosome. It is the only car with a vampire driver!Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-81757966775518336342019-11-18T14:10:00.002+00:002019-11-18T14:10:55.122+00:00Bolt Action - US Deuce and a Half TrucksAt the same time I made my Oddball's Sherman Tank I made and painted a pair of American 2.5 trucks made by Warlord Games.
Like Oddball's Sherman these are a combination of resin and metal parts. The cab, main body and tarpaulin cover are made of resin and the rest of metal.
Sometimes referred to as the "deuce and a half" the 2.5 ton truck was the standard US general purpose army cargo truck used for haulage as well as troop transportation and as a prime mover for howitzers and anti-tank guns. Nicknamed "Jimmy" at General Motors, over 800,000 were built and these vehicles contributed enormously to the Allied victory.
These are very fine models and useful in games of Bolt Action for transporting your American forces. It can transport 18 men, which is a lot. They went together very well and were fun to paint.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-82187016239602928712019-11-12T15:26:00.000+00:002019-11-12T15:26:13.609+00:00Bolt Action - Oddball's Sherman TankI have spent a lot of my time these past couple of months making and painting infantry figures to use in my Bolt Action games. The time felt right to start work on some vehicles. So, my first choice of vehicle to make and paint was Oddball's Sherman Tank from the excellent movie, Kelly's Heroes.

The tank is produced by Warlord Games as part of the official Bolt Action range and comes with a booklet giving its stats for use in the game. Stats are provided for a realistic version as well as the Hollywood version, which is so over the top.

The main body, turret and tracks are made of resin and all of the other parts are made of metal. As you can see, it comes with four figures - Sergeant Oddball sitting in the turret, Turk sitting on the turret, Private Moriarty the loader in the hull and the unnamed driver sitting next to him.

I have glued all the figures in place. Note the loudspeaker at the right side of the turret. At the end of each turn, Oddball's Sherman and any other Sherman within 12" loses D3 pin markers, such is the soothing power of Hank Williams.

There is a 90mm drainage pipe sitting next to the turret. If placed over the main gun barrel any enemy vehicle which can trace line of sight to the drainage tube must pass an order test to activate, even if it does not have any pin markers. The Sherman's crew are immune to Tiger Fear because 90mm is greater than 88mm.

The Sherman is festooned with all sorts of gear, such as backpacks, jerry cans, crates and sacks. Who knows what loot they may contain?
The engine has been replaced by Moriarty's Detroit Motors engine, which allows the tank to move at wheeled speed instead of tracked speed. It also has the option of firing paint ammunition, which may be fired intentionally or by accident.
Oddball's Sherman is a great model, full of character and humour. As my only Sherman tank so far I'll be using it as a veteran Sherman tank using the standard rules. I'll use the Hollywood version rules in a special Kelly's Heroes scenario.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-11050097559100397062019-11-08T15:11:00.000+00:002019-11-08T15:11:21.049+00:00Bolt Action - US G.I. Squad 01When I was putting together my Easy Company figures I purchased a few sets of American G.I.s from Artizan Designs. With the figures I had left over (they come in packs of four figures) I had enough to make up a single squad of infantrymen to use in Bolt Action. Here they are -

The section is led by a corporal at the far left. He is armed with a Carbine. These are all regular Late War infantrymen.
Three of the squad are armed with .45 Thompson SMGs. Whilst not strictly legal rules-wise I am including them anyway. At the far right is the squad's Browning Automatic Rifle user.
I like this range a lot because the figures are very well sculpted in a variety of realistic poses. They certainly complement the Warlord Games plastic American Infantrymen very well. I have a box of 30 of them to make and they're high on my to do list.I am now expanding my American army to include airborne troops and regular G.I.s.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-66071196275166771972019-11-05T15:40:00.000+00:002019-11-05T22:56:00.490+00:00Bolt Action US GI Easy CompanyEasy Company of the American World War 2 General Infantry was the unit that Sergeant Franklin John Rock served in and in this post I'm going to highlight him and his squads of men. Sergeant Rock is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Sgt. Rock first appeared in Our Army at War #83 (June 1959), and was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. The character is a World War 2 veteran who served as an infantry non-commissioned officer. During World War 2, Sgt. Rock fought in the infantry branch of the U.S. Army in the Italian and European Theatres and eventually rose to authority within his unit, Easy Company.
The unit was a collection of disparate individuals who managed to
participate in every major action in the European war. Rock's dog-tag
number was 409966, which had been, it was claimed, Robert Kanigher's own
military serial number.
At the far left is the Warlord Games figure of Sgt. Rock. Being ambidextrous, he is shown holding a .45 Thompson Sub-Machine Gun in both hands. Naturally his uniform is torn because he is always in the thick of any action. There were a number of figures I could have used for Sgt. Rock but this is the one I liked best of all.
Next to him is Corporal Horace "Bulldozer" Nicholls, Rock's second-in-command. Big as an ox with a heart to match, he's had the closest relationship with the Sarge and calls the shots whenever Rock is out of action. His figure is a Heroclix version of Sgt. Rock but because of his size and physique he is a perfect version of "Bulldozer".

Ex-heavyweight champion Jackie Johnson is a private in Easy Company's roster. He was a Heroclix unnamed G.I. who I thought was a good match for Private Johnson.
Last in line is the fourth figure to be armed with a Thompson SMG, Worry Wart, who is convinced that every enemy bullet has his name on it. He is an unconverted Artizan Designs American infantryman with SMG.

Moving on, at the far left is Harold Shapiro, a mild-mannered history teacher who becomes "Wildman" when pushed too far. He was a Heroclix G.I. Medic whom I converted by adding his distinctive red beard and moustache and losing his medic markings.
"Four Eyes" is so nicknamed because he wears glasses. His figure was another Heroclix version of Sgt. Rock, which, in my opinion, was too static for an a iconic action hero but perfect for "Four Eyes". I added his glasses, backpack and assorted pouches.

Third in line is Private Terry O'Riley who hated the heat but became the perfect "Ice Cream Soldier" when the weather was freezing. A native of the hard-scrabble New York City streets, he's the company's wise guy. He is an unconverted Artizan Designs American Infantryman with Rifle.
Kneeling down is "Farmer Boy" who refused to let the war stop him from doing what he was born to do - grow crops. He is a Warlord Games plastic US Infantryman depicted growing a flower in his helmet, which he has adapted to be a flower pot.

These next four figures are all produced by Artizan Designs from their WW2 American Infantry range. At the far left is "Sunny" so called because of his ever cheerful disposition. He is the spotter for the team's sniper, "Little Sure Shot".
"Little Sure Shot" is a full-blooded Apache Indian tracker and is regularly Easy Company's point man. He is an expert marksman and what he lacks in size he makes up for with stealth, speed, accuracy and cold blooded efficiency. I added his trademark feathers to his helmet out of Milliput.
The bazooka team is made up of Short Round the loader and Long Round the bazooka firer. They replaced Zack, the one-armed bazooka operator who was killed in action.
Sadly, there are no rules for using Easy Company in Bolt Action. However, I would definitely class them all as veterans and I would give them the Stubborn and Tough Fighters special rules.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-69752829859141805202019-11-02T16:41:00.001+00:002019-11-02T16:41:52.191+00:00Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter - a ReviewThis world is not the only one. That was the painful lesson learned by the denizens of Mega City One when Judge Death descended upon the city from Deadworld. With him, they first encountered dimension jump. The Dark Judges came again and again, ravaging the people of this world in their judgement.
The Sovs' dimension shield flung nukes into alternate worlds during the Apocalypse War. Judge Cal brought old enemies to Mega City One, colliding different realities to destroy Dredd once and for all. Each time, the very fabric of reality was stretched and the line between worlds blurred.
Now, whatever was holding the world and its neighbours apart has shattered. Buildings flicker in and out of existence. Horrifying creatures roam the streets. People long-dead and from the far future are appearing, joined by many who had never existed in this world at all. Death and destruction rule supreme.
It's Helter Skelter.
But there is hope for those with the willpower to brave the chaos. As the worlds bleed together, some fragments of reality remain pure, untouched by the cataclysm around them. By finding and connecting these fragments, they can restore the world they're from and its inhabitants can return.
This is the rationale behind the Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter boardgame. The game is designed for two to four players but I have been playing it solo with two factions. The game board is double-sided with the Dan Tanna and Enid Blyton blocks shown on one side (see photo above) and the Grand Hall of Justice on the other side. To win, a faction must collect five of their fragments of reality and/or kill five enemies or any combination adding up to five. The game uses no dice but is entirely card driven. Gameplay is very simple and easy to learn. The rulebook is only 12 pages long. There are four factions in the game, each comprising of five unique 28mm scale figures.

The Judges
The Judges are the Law in Mega City One, the last bastion of order in a world gone mad. The Judges are fierce fighters who excel when working closely together, but they are more than capable on their own.
Judge Giant is a steadfast soldier and a fierce warrior, wielding his shotgun to deadly effect.
Judge Anderson's psi abilities weaken her opponents, leaving her foes vulnerable.
Chief Judge Hershey is a savvy strategist, excellent at manoeuvring herself and her team to deadly effect.
Judge Dredd is a force of nature, firing high-explosive rounds to destroy his foes.
Mean Machine has been drafted to join the Judges in the chaos, and his extreme capacity for violence is a welcome addition to the team.

The Strontium Dogs
The Search/Destroy agents, better known as the Strontium Dogs, are space-travelling bounty hunters and mutants warped by the fallout from the Atomic War. The Strontium Dogs rely on their ranged capabilities, but they aren't afraid to get up-close and personal.
Middenface McNulty is a seasoned warrior, well-equipped and hard-headed.
Durham Red is a powerful mutant with vampiric abilities, and a lethal close-up combatant.
Johnny Alpha, their leader, combines the supernatural abilities of his eyes with excellent gunmanship.
Wulf Sternhammer is a brawler through and through, and goes toe-to-toe with the strongest of them.
The Gronk is a timid soul and not much for combat, but it's always on hand to heal its friends.

Nikolai Dante
Nikolai Dante and his allies are well versed in war and chaos, hardened in the battles between the Makarovs and the Romanovs. They rely on their speed to get close to their foes, quickly trading range for melee powers.

Viktor Romanov is a solitary warrior, with his power to transform into an eagle granting him great mobility and strength.
Tsarina Jena Makarov is a born leader, commanding her allies on the battlefield with natural ease.
Nikolai Dante is an expert with his sword and his rifle, the courageous leader of the team.
Elena Kurakin Nikolai's bodyguard, promises a swift and violent end to anybody who threatens him.
Lulu Romanov has the power to create swarms of demons to overpower her foes, extending her reach.

Slaine MacRoth
Slaine MacRoth leads a small group of his closest; his wife and son, and his chronicler Ukko. Outnumbered and Outgunned, they rely on brute force and cunning play to reach victory.
Ukko is a cunning and stealthy dwarf, who causes a lot of damage when he gets up close.
Slaine MacRoth wields his massive axe Brainbiter, demolishing his foes, and is capable of transforming into a berserking hulk.
Niamh is a vicious and strong-willed fury across the battlefield, unmatched for speed.
Kai is trained in the Druidic arts, and is able to wield his magic for rejuvenation or destruction.
Warp-Spasm Slaine does not start the game but must be transformed into by Slaine. Once transformed, he remains in this form for the rest of the game.

The figures have all been ink-washed, which really shows of their stunning detail. I mainly bought this game for the figures but instantly fell in love with the gameplay. Up till now, no-one has ever made Nikolai Dante figures, so they are a most welcome addition. I was asked to provide a size comparison photo and here it is.
From left to right are a Wargames Foundry Judge, a Mongoose Judge, a Warlord Games Judge and the Osprey Games Judge Dredd. He is a good match size-wise but is more realistically proportioned. I will, of course, be painting all of the Helter Skelter miniatures. The sculpting of them is excellent. They are made of hard plastic.
Each player sets up on the board in five of 40 zones randomly selected by an opponent. Players receive seven action cards at the start of the game and can play any amount of them to activate their characters providing the card has a symbol that matches the chosen character. It costs one card to move one zone or to make an attack or defence, two cards to climb to a higher level and three cards to pick up a fragment of reality token. Fragment of reality tokens are randomly assigned to five zones not occupied by a player. Each turn, players receive three new cards to restock their hands but can't go over seven cards. The key to winning is knowing what cards to play on what characters, making it a very tactical game and a lot of fun.
For any 2000 AD fan, this is a must have game as I can't recommend it too highly. It's fast, it's fun, it's easy to play but hard to master, so give it a try. I have played it quite a few times now using different factions against each other and all my games have been very closely fought with either side having a good chance of winning so it would seen all four factions are evenly matched. As I said in my last Monthly Musings, Amazon UK are selling it for £39.00 instead of £60.00 - a massive saving.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-75726397547296115042019-10-30T11:09:00.002+00:002019-10-30T11:09:48.687+00:00Vampifans Views 124 - Monthly Musings 94

I have had yet another incredibly prolific month painting and model making. But first, I present another portrait of Vampirella as painted by Jim Silke. It certainly shows her in a playful and naughty mood. It does not offend me as I really like this picture. It does show just how skimpy Vampirella's costume is.

I mentioned above that I have been doing a lot of model making this past month. For Bolt Action I have made my first vehicles - two "Deuce and a Half" trucks for my American forces and Oddball's M4A3 Sherman tank. I have just about finished painting them so expect reviews of them very soon. Once they are finished I plan on making three German Hanomag Sdkfz 251 half tracks. These are plastic models. The two "Deuce and a Half" trucks and Oddball's Sherman were part resin and part metal, so were very quick to assemble. I thoroughly enjoyed making them as I very rarely make vehicles.

I was especially pleased to finish painting the last of my Core Space Trader crews. Expect a Core Space batrep very soon. I am still painting lots of figures for my Bolt Action project. I finished painting two American G.I. squads, one of which was led by Sergeant Rock and features about a dozen named characters, which I'll be showing very soon. I am currently painting some German specialist teams - a medium machine gun team, a medium mortar team, two sniper teams and a high command squad. They should get finished in the next couple of days. I am trying to get as many Bolt Action figures painted during November because of the following.

Warlord Games will be releasing the new Judge Dredd skirmish game in late-November, just in time for my birthday. Because I want everything to do with this game I have pre-ordered the Mega One Launch offer package, which features everything available from the first wave. At £230.00 it is definitely expensive but it is cheaper buying everything in one go than in buying the components individually. My favourite figure out of this launch is Judge Dredd on the Mk.III Lawmaster bike - a quite exceptional sculpt. The timing of this launch is perfect for me as I am very close to starting my Judge Dredd Role Playing Game campaign on my WOIN blog. I am more interested in collecting the figures than in playing the game, which is based on the Strontium Dogs rules. That's not to say I won't play the game but how often will be determined after I read the rulebook.

With me spending so much pre-ordering the Judge Dredd Mega One pledge I was hoping not to spend any more money on gaming items but lo and behold I spot this item to the left here on Blaxkleric's blog and knew I had to have it. This is Zombicide 2nd Edition, which has upgraded the rules for easier play and what I found most exciting, offers the Zombicide Role-Playing Book. That is something I am very keen to play. The new figures are a vast improvement over the ones in the original Zombicide boxed set. I was pleased to see that the original six survivors are still present with stunning new sculpts. In addition, I have also ordered the Washington ZC expansion supplement in which the survivors get the chance to meet the president of the USA. This is a Kickstarter game so won't be released until November 2020 barring any delays. I'm patient, so I don't mind waiting. Once again, I want everything that is available for this game so I have gone for the All Out pledge for £141.00. Given the huge amount of free stretch goals you get this is really good value for money. On the down side I am going to have loads of zombies to paint as well as a large amount of survivors. Ah, well, it'll keep me busy! Also, the figures and tiles from the previous contemporary Zombicide sets can be used with 2nd edition.
Yesterday I received the Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter boardgame by Osprey Games. This is based on the Helter Skelter story from 2000 AD comics #1250-1261 written by Garth Ennis. Martin Wallace is at the helm once again here, bringing his Wildlands
format to the tabletop but with a Judge Dredd spin. This miniatures
board game has you playing as unique and iconic characters from the
worlds of 2000 AD like Judge Dredd, Slaine, Nikolai Dante and Strontium Dogs as
you rush around Mega-City One trying to find aspects of their shattered
universe and of course crushing, blowing up, and shooting anyone who
gets in their way. The game comes with 20 superbly sculpted 28mm scale plastic figures - five unique characters from each of the four factions. All of them are ink-washed in order to bring out the detail in the
figures which means that you don't need to go that extra step to pretty
them up if you don't want to! I have played the game once and absolutely loved it. The Strontium Dogs defeated the Judges in a very closely fought fight. I bought it primarily for the figures but the gameplay has really won me over and I want to play it again and again. The production values of this game is excellent and I have no criticisms to make. A review of the figures will appear in my next post. It has a RRP of £60.00. Amazon UK has it for sale at only £39.00, which is an absolute bargain.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-4321662871653081932019-10-25T11:09:00.000+01:002019-10-25T11:12:07.322+01:00Core Space - Crew of the YamatoHere I present the final of the six crews who are part of the Core Space sci-fi skirmish game by Battle Systems Ltd. This means that I have painted all of the figures supplied with the starter boxed set and supplements, which is always a great feeling.
Captain Johann Weiss, a 50-year old human, served the military of his homeworld faithfully for thirty years but was retired against his will due to cutbacks. Knowing only how to be a soldier he struggled to adapt to civilian life. Feeling both betrayed and lost he drifted on the fringes, moving from system to system attempting to find a commission as a soldier in a different military. The Galactic Corps beckoned but he'd never liked the look of it.
Weiss found work amongst the Traders mostly as a pilot, and eventually took the command of the Yamato where he has made a new life for himself. He still has a stiff military bearing but has learned that his crew aren't soldiers and that sometimes a soft approach works better than barking orders. He is in general an avuncular man but with tendencies to brood.

Alecia Tunde is a 22-year old human who was fast heading for trouble. Loud
mouthed and scornful of authority as a child she passed from one
institution to another before being dumped out in the cold on her
sixteenth birthday. She moved from one gang to another trying to find a
family but soon realised that she wasn't cold or hard enough for that
life. Brutality was common and criminality expected, but by then she had
nowhere else to go.
Eventually Weiss caught her in a botched attempt to steal cargo from the Yamato. Weiss didn't see a hardened criminal, just a scared child, so instead of handing her over to the local security he offered her a job. Leaving the gang was no hardship and she settled in quickly and found she had a talent for engineering. Although she would never admit it openly, she sees Weiss as the father she never had.
Third in line is Ellen Koharu, a 36-year old human. Although looking little more than a child Ellen has had a long and hard life as a mercenary. She ran guns through the most dangerous sectors of the galaxy and considers the borders of Purge space to be just another job. She struck on the idea of selling her skills as "Beast and Master" when she found the broken wreck of a Merg living in a freak show.
Ellen learned to control the "beast" via a neural network patched directly to her bracelets. In reality the relationship is far more symbiotic and over the years the beast, a Merg called Brutus, has become, in many ways, an extension of herself. The responsibility of this relationship has softened her slightly but you wouldn't know it if you met her in a firefight.

Brutus is a large and powerful being from a species known as the Merg. He has an intelligence on a par with a higher primate and is able to articulate his thoughts and feelings in a fashion, but on the whole keeps his own counsel. Mentally he is like a child who needs comfort and security but will fly into a destructive rage if handled poorly.
He was a broken wreck after several years of abuse before Ellen found him. He accepts Ellen's control and without her guidance would succumb to the destructive nature that caused his species to be hunted to near extinction. Brutus is near uncontrollable when riled and the empathic link is broken. He may take a new link from someone other than Ellen, but this is highly unlikely. The rest of the crew keep their distance from him, regarding him as a trained attack dog that could turn savage at any moment.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-69690611831796286572019-10-22T14:51:00.000+01:002019-10-28T13:51:41.724+00:00Core Space - Crew of the SkylarkHere is the fifth crew of the Traders from the Core Space sci-fi skirmish game by Battle Systems Ltd. They comprise three humans and one robot.

At the far left is Jonathan Weaver, a 42-year old human who is in charge of the Skylark and he lets you know it. He has no time for insubordination or ineptness - on his ship you pull your weight or you're out. He is a hard and ruthless taskmaster but knows how to repay loyalty. He is also surprisingly good with animals. Weaver has his thumbs in many pies in enterprises that are dubious at best. Weaver will fence stolen goods and run arms; in fact, he'll do anything to make a profit. Whether he enjoys the life of a Trader is unknown as he rarely shares his feelings. What thoughts lie behind those hard eyes are his alone.
His closest companion is Marlowe, although they constantly argue, mostly about Weaver's conduct. At some point Weaver may step completely into the criminal world leaving behind the conflicts and grey areas of the Trader life.

Second from the left is Faye Millicent, a 19-year old human, the new recruit, the rookie who still finds everything exciting. Escaping a life of dullness on a backwoods planet, she moves from ship to ship, learning new skills and experiencing dangers and triumphs she'd never dreamed of. She detests travelling by Core Space but considers it a necessary evil for her life.
Faye is rough around the edges when it comes to social graces, but this tends not to be a problem in Trader circles. She also has an intuitive knack for technology with a Trader's eye for mastering the bodge - getting long expired parts to work in new and interesting ways. At this point in her career she's berthed with Weaver's crew and wondering whether she should. A Trader's life is full of hard choices and it's becoming harder to tell who's right and who's wrong. She has found a friend in Marlowe and to an extent, MAC.

Next up is Marlowe Chibueze, a 36-year old Augmented human who tries to do no harm. Although many Augmented let the power go to their heads, Marlowe knows it's all a game. He studies the universe, trying to see where he best fits in. For him this life is but a passing moment, one that he doesn't wish to sully or through inaction allow to be sullied by others.
Born to a wealthy family, Marlowe found himself becoming more and more distant from his peers eventually losing himself in the fringe worlds. Here he is free to make his own decisions and decide his own future without the crushing weight of expectation that his family upholds. Marlowe often acts as the conscience of Captain Weaver curtailing his excesses. Their relationship is often strained and at some point will most likely snap. Marlowe sees a core of goodness in Weaver but is increasingly alarmed by his captain's actions.

MAC is approximately 150-years old, a human origin robot who is tentatively a member of the crew, on a rolling contract as a mercenary. Originally a semi-autonomous loader machine employed in docking bays MAC has, over its long existence, upgraded its hardware and software, achieving a form of sentience. Machine awareness is contentious depending on which part of the galaxy you're from but MAC has been granted provisional rights to earn and keep its own money.
MAC uses its money for further upgrades, slowly reaching for an ideal that eludes it. Despite being created y humans, MAC doesn't see them as a pinnacle of evolution but rather as an interesting and fundamentally ridiculous bunch - along with all other biological forms. MAC finds the Purge fascinating but repellent, and considers them their own evolutionary dead end. MAC wants something else from this journey but is unsure of what.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-9270082680162870442019-10-18T15:17:00.001+01:002019-10-18T15:17:42.167+01:00Core Space - Crew of the PoseidonI'm taking a short break from showcasing my Bolt Action figures to concentrate on the last three crews for the Core Space sci-fi skirmish game by Battle Systems Ltd. In this post, I'm highlighting the crew of the Poseidon.

At the far left is Captain Oberon Teelac, a 36-year old human. He crashes through life drawing all eyes and derision. Delusional and gung-ho with a penchant for the glory days of Hollywood, he seems to think he is the hero of his own story, recklessly careering into situations and risking everyone's lives. However, his abrasive attitude hides a deeply insecure and fearful man.
Forced into a life he didn't choose he brazens it out in the best way he can. He has been scarred in part, by the destructive relationship with his twin sister, Satiene, a woman prepared to sacrifice her closest family for her own gain. Oberon prefers action to talk, spontaneity to plans. In many ways it is amazing that he is still alive. Disinherited from a once powerful family, Oberon blunders through life without a goal, looking for approval and rarely finding it.

The crew's only female is Helene Hoskins, a 30-year old human. Born to Trader parents, a childhood accident in Core Space has left Hoskins dimensionally unstable. Part of her physical, living brain is melded into the fabric of Core Space itself. Her condition puzzles neurologists who have concluded that her brain is a direct conduit to Core Space and that she functions because her missing brain is still alive, albeit elsewhere. Over time this conduit has made her increasingly unstable, leaving her delusional and aggressive with a hair trigger temper.
She is an excellent close combat fighter and has drifted from ship to ship, spending as much time in Core Space as possible, as only then does she feel completely whole and sane. The Trader life has been chosen for her, something she laments but is powerless to do anything about. She is close to her shipmate, Pi, who she considers an equal unfortunate.

Pi is a 20-year old Augmented human. He grew up on the streets, an orphan who doesn't know his own given name. He is a true cyberpunk, young and self-taught, a survivor, intelligent and resourceful, he has augmented himself using repurposed junk and outdated tech, often writing the source code himself.
Pi mistakenly believed that the Augmented were higher beings and his ascension to their ranks would alleviate all his suffering. However, augmentation is stressful under the best of conditions and the rough self-surgery has taken its toll. His implants cause him constant pain, inflamed and interfering with his nervous system. His attempts to reverse the condition have failed and he desperately needs funds to afford corrective surgery. He is still an effective Augment when out in the field, his system flooded with synthetic neuropeptides, the price being a long and uncomfortable comedown. Pi has an uncertain future as his mind is slowly coming apart, but he can still fight, for now...

Finally is Thoman Thomansson, a 26-year old human, who is an ex-soldier, disillusioned with the Galactic Corps and looking for a cause and a leader to follow. He grew up believing that the Corps represented all that was good and noble in humanity but first-hand experience of the brutality and corruption endemic at its core has made him reassess his life and his very being.
A skilled soldier, he is however, incapable of making decisions without doubting himself. He craves discipline and order and the freedom to trust his superiors. He has become rudderless and has drifted to the Poseidon, known to other Traders as a ship of fools. He struggles to relate to the other crew members and constantly looks for other ships to berth with or militia to join - but deep down believes he is where he deserves to be and chooses to do nothing. Steiner's Recce SquadI vividly remember the first time I watched Sam Peckinpah's iconic WW2 film, Cross of Iron at the cinema in the 1970's and was just blown away by it. It certainly left a deep and lasting impression on me as it was unlike any other war film I'd seen with it's gritty, very bloody battle scenes and most unusually, it featured the Germans as the "good guys" fighting the Russians. I have since acquired it on Blu-ray and it still packs a hell off a punch.
There are a small number of companies who make Sergeant Steiner (played by James Coburn) 28mm scale figures but the set I liked the most is this one below by First Corps Miniatures. Not only does it feature Steiner but also six of his squad, all of whom are recognisable as the characters they play in the film. For Bolt Action purposes I have split the figures into a five-man veteran Panzer Grenadier squad, all armed with sub-machine guns and a veteran two-man Sniper team.

So, from left to right we have Sergeant Steiner, Private Anselm, Private Maas, Private Schnurbbert and Private Kern.

Note that Steiner has replaced his MP40 SMG with a Russian PPSH SMG. Private Anselm is the radio operator, Maas is the squad's cook, Schnurbbert is nicknamed "Moustache" for obvious reasons and Kern is a bookworm and intellectual.

The Sniper team is made up of Corporal Kruger, the spotter armed with a KAR 98 Bolt Action Rifle and Private Dietz the sniper, whose KAR 98 is fitted with telescopic sights. Both men have stick grenades tucked into their right boots and Kruger has a Walther P38 Pistol tucked into the back of his belt.
As a bonus, you got an MP40 SMG resting against a tree stump. I added a KAR98 Rifle and a Panzerfaust to it to make a small ammo dump objective.
These figures have a lot chunkier feel to them than those by other companies like Artisan or Warlord Games but I have no problem in wanting to add them to my Bolt Action German army.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-34479867842678323052019-10-11T14:57:00.001+01:002019-10-11T14:57:35.033+01:00Bolt Action Panzer Grenadiers Infantry 02My first German Panzer Grenadier squad that I showed last month were all metal figures. This ten-man squad is led by an NCO at the far left, holding a pair of binoculars and a map in his hands. His STG44 Assault Rifle is slung across his back.
With him are five men armed with STG44 Assault Rifles. Four are shown in the two photos above and the remaining one, throwing a stick grenade, is in the two photos below at the far left.
To maximise the squad's firepower I have included two LMG teams. Veteran Panzer Grenadier squads are one of the very few squads that are allowed to take two LMG teams. With the Hitler's Buzzsaw army rule, the two LMGs have 10 fire dice and the six Assault Rifles gives the squad a further 12 fire dice for a total of 22 dice to hit using ranged attacks. That's a scary amount of firepower from just ten men!
Note that the dark green tubes carried on the backs of the two machine gunners and their loaders contain spare barrels for the MG42s, which were prone to overheating.
These figures went together very well and they come with a very good selection of weapons and equipment. I can highly recommend them. I am not a big fan of prone figures so I was pleased to see no prone figures in this set.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-71029432521954719952019-10-08T14:25:00.000+01:002019-10-08T22:40:26.077+01:00Bolt Action Resistance Fighters 01I bought these six 28mm scale figures from a seller on eBay. They were described as Partisans/Resistance Fighters for Bolt Action, which they certainly are. Unfortunately, he neglected to say who produced them and my Google-fu has come up blank. Warlord Games does sell packs of Partisans to use in Bolt Action so I'll combine them for a larger force. The Warlord Games Partisans are predominantly male, whilst these figures are all female.

At the far left is my favourite figure from this set - the leader armed with a Luger pistol. The next two figures in line are armed with MP40 SMGs.

The lady who is fourth in line is armed with an MP40 SMG slung over her left shoulder and carries a German stick grenade in her right hand. The two women at the far right are armed with bolt action rifles. Note that I converted the woman in the olive green long-coat by adding a plastic rifle with sling from one of my German Panzer Grenadier sprues.
Rules and stats for using Partisans/Resistance Fighters can be found in the campaign supplement, Market Garden, where they are classed as Green. They count as inexperienced at the start of a battle but do have a chance of upgrading to regular status during the game when they first take a casualty. On a d6 roll of 5-6 they upgrade to regular status, increasing their morale value from 8 to 9.
Being an all-female force, I really like this set. Female resistance fighters were a reality of WW2 but very little is heard about them.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-46831374200651975502019-10-05T13:56:00.000+01:002019-10-05T13:56:28.077+01:00Bolt Action RAF Downed PilotStill sticking with my new Bolt Action 28mm scale figures, here is something different from my usual American and German forces - a British RAF downed pilot.
In the Bolt Action rulebook, there is a scenario called Top Secret, in which both sides must locate the crash site of a downed plane to retrieve a briefcase containing secret documents. There is no reason why the objective couldn't be this downed pilot instead, making him an ideal objective marker. Try to rescue him before your opponent catches up with him.Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8423998700545338590.post-89664884337153794372019-10-02T11:54:00.000+01:002019-10-02T11:55:46.663+01:00Bolt Action US Pathfinder Infantry Sections 01On the plastic sprues for the US Airborne Infantry are two heads with Mohican haircuts. This is the 1st Pathfinder squad of the 101st Airborne Division. They are led by an NCO armed with a M3 "Grease Gun" SMG and a machete. Of the other men, one is armed with a Thompson SMG, whilst the other four are armed with M1 Rifles and Carbines.
American pathfinders were not drawn from a dedicated unit in the same way as the British 21st Independent Company, but from the main body of parachute infantry regiments or in some cases, from a battalion level "scout" platoon. The men were chosen on the basis of skill-at-arms, dedication and proven initiative. Pathfinder units could be as small as three 4-man teams and no larger than three 6-man teams. For Bolt Action purposes the latter choice is used. Given their very specific task and high level of training the teams did not really have a command structure as such; every man had a task to perform and knew exactly when and where to carry it out without direction.
The 2nd squad is made up exactly the same as the 1st squad - an NCO and one private armed with SMGs and the rest with Rifles and Carbines. US Pathfinders are classed as veteran units. The stats for them can be found in the campaign supplement Market Garden.
Pathfinders have the following special rule - Exceptional Training. This exceptional level of training and motivation means that Pathfinder teams always use their unmodified morale of 10 for any and all morale-based tests (i.e. order tests, morale checks, tank fear, etc.).Vampifanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11318241813130102121noreply@blogger.com14
